On the Infinity of God

All of our intelligence combined is like the intelligence of a fly compared to You.

All of our understanding is like a pebble at the foot of a mountain.

All of our faith is like a grain of sand next to the depthless ocean of Your faith.

And that is with Your grace. How much less could we know and understand and believe without You? We could know nothing. We could understand nothing. We could believe nothing. We cannot exist, much less thrive, without Your willing it.

Yet You have willed, and You are doing it. You have been ever since You created. You are still creating, in a dimension we cannot observe with the physical senses. You re-create us. You do the choosing, You do the creating, and You make it plain to us, for our good and Your glory.

Yet as You grow us into what You have willed, we are still infinitely small to you. We are finite and You are infinite; therefore we are all exactly the same in comparison with You. When we “grow up”, thinking we have improved in strength and understanding and intellect, it is not we ourselves who have grown, but only our egos. Our standing in this vast cosmos has remained the same ever since our conception by Your providence. We grow only by Your grace, and even that does not make any one of us greater than another next to You. Your infinity swallows up us all.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has first given to God, that God needs to repay him? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever! Amen.
